There is a long association between Addenbrooke’s Hospital and The Alfred in Melbourne which was successful until NCCU was forced to employ one of their castoffs recently.

The intensive care unit at The Alfred is remarkable, the video below is by the architects who designed it. The unit has a exceptional and comprehensive approach to training, particularly for trainees at the peri-consultant stage, and has been a finishing school for a lot of UK and Irish ICM consultants. Owen Roodenburg runs training there and has recently established a new role, the After Hours Clinical Lead, which has won awards for the training it provides as well as the novel approach to out of hours care.

Aspects of the non-clinical training encompassed within this new role are also offered as a short course, Consultant in Transition, run by Owen. The next one is in August and early bird registration is finishing soon. People who have been on this course prior to UK consultant interviews and taking up their posts have found it immensely useful and it is highly recommended.
